About the Artist

Ramon Matheu - Pop Artist in

Maryland Eastern Shore artist and Bay Pop Shop founder Ramon Matheu creates Chesapeake Bay-inspired artwork shaped by a lifelong connection to the region’s wildlife, coastal culture, traditions, and environmental restoration.

Inspiration

"Crabe Bleu" is my Maryland version of the famous 1896 "Le Chat Noir" poster created by French artist Théophile Steinlen. I’ve always enjoyed taking recognizable pieces of art and culture and giving them a Chesapeake Bay twist, and this one practically begged for a Blue Crab.

My pop-art version replaces the famous black cat with our Maryland icon and adds a playful French-inspired message about the delicious steamed Blue Crab. A little French cabaret, a little Maryland crab feast—and somehow the two work pretty well together.
